Most people don’t know this, but Pinterest doesn’t actually function like other social media sites. Although it measures what viewers look at, how long they view content, and what you save, like, and comment on like other media sites do, it also functions as a search engine like Google. This means that it prioritizes content that meets certain requirements that build up reliability over time. Although it sounds a bit confusing, utilizing the Pinterest search engine can help prioritize your content through a few key factors that build up over time when specific words or phrases are searched.
By utilizing this information and using Pinterest as what it is – a search engine – while applying some social media knowledge, I was able to start and grow multiple client accounts. With my most successful account so far, I was able to quadruple one of my clients’ reach from a tad under one million viewers the year prior to four and a half million viewers within two months of taking over the account during their peak season. This came with higher pin activity and link clicks, of course! What does this mean? MORE BUSINESS. Pinterest is a tool in business that is unmatched in the eyes of any other platform to direct traffic to your site and services (or product)! What’s even better? I accomplished all of this within a few months of learning about Pinterest’s algorithm and format. So anybody can do it.
Here’s what goes into building Pinterest’s trust to eventually get the traction your account needs to grow, thrive, and earn!
Above all else, consistency is key when it comes to Pinterest. This means your activity on the app, the amount you post, and your specialty – whatever that may be.
Are you an engaged user? Differentiate yourself from a bot by being active on others’ content! This doesn’t necessarily mean just pinning other people’s pins. This can mean watching videos, commenting, reviewing DIYs and recipes, anything! Help Pinterest to trust you as a person. Not some automated system.
Although creating enough content to keep up with a preplanned schedule may feel overwhelming, it makes all the difference. We do recommend posting at MINIMUM once every other day. But if we’re talking best results, go for twice a day – once in the AM and once in the PM. This tells Pinterest that you are a reliable source to count on.
Maintaining a consistent specialty within a defined subcategory is often coined as a niche. This can be “Cooking Brazilian Food” or “Bohemian Modern Style Home Decorating”. Something focused, yet expandable. This means Pinterest will be confused if the Brazilian Food Chef suddenly begins producing chocolate chip cookie recipes. It will take a while to rebuild the site’s trust as it relearns what you’re all about. The more you throw it off course, the harder your posts are to optimize.
As we mentioned refer, yes, Pinterest is a search engine. It thrives off of keywords just as bing and Google do (on top of all the social fun it brings!). Growing a Pinterest account is more correlated with ranking higher as you would on a site like Google.
Put yourself into to mind of your target customer. Who are they? Maybe an engaged couple looking for a wedding photographer? What sorts of things would they look up? What would they type into Pinterest for inspo on? Where do they live? What hashtags will they search for? These things will become your keywords and phrases. Try to write blog posts for linking and post images with these words or phrases riddles throughout to tell Pinterest exactly what you’re here for.
**Pro tip: Look up synonyms and like terms to create a brainstorming map for other potential keywords within your category you may not have thought up yourself! In case you need a visual, we put an example up there for you! 😉
Everything about your Pinterest comes back to one thing – does it appeal? To your audience, to Pinterest, to other business owners in your field? This all contributes to how well your posts perform.
The quality of your account is determined mostly by the aspects of your account’s consistency as we previously went over along with being properly linked to your site. By proving you produce consistent content from an original source as a real person, you’re telling Pinterest about the quality of your creations. Then by making sure whatever site you link has proper SEO optimization that matches the category of posts on Pinterest you produce. For example: your site is all about dogs, but you produce pins about cake. That won’t look like great quality to Pinterest. If you’re an elopement photographer, make sure all of your platforms align with that message!
Another factor to be taken into consideration is how your audience is reacting. You can’t put blurry photos or something completely off topic up and expect your audience to help it perform well. Pinterest likes what your viewers like, so target that audience and put out content you know they’ll like, click, and pin.
When you search “Organization” on Pinterest, you get rows of beautiful black and white containers filled with rainbow color-coordinated items lining walls and shelving units. But every once in a while, you see something that grabs your attention and attracts your eye because of how different it is. Here are a couple examples of eye-catching content found among the organization results:
As you can see above, these bright colors draw your eye to them, making it easy to rank high if it’s also taken well by your idea audience. In a sea of similar content, although it may be beautiful, creating more content that’ll blend into what is already so saturated will drown your content out! So the best way to fight it is to create a photo or graphic that’s different and contrasts all the other content out there. So mess around with different photos and graphics to see what not only pops off the page, but also appeals to your audience!
